Ideas for Easier Living
Current Trends:

Americans are aging and most desire to stay in their own homes.  The current term for this is called aging-in-place or transgenerational design.  According to the US Census, there are close to 50,000,000 people aged 65 or older and that number is expected to rise as more of the Baby Boomers continue to age and the life expectancy also continues to rise.  What this means is that the population is aging and there needs to be a change in the current design modality- it can't be all about looks and status any longer.  Design needs to encompass the functions and requirements of how to make the occupants life easier, safer and more comfortable.

Some of the things that need to be considered from a design and decorating point of view include ease of upkeep, safety, comfort, and accessibility with possible mobility limitations.

Ideas You Can Use:

  • Use cork, laminate, engineered or hardwood flooring in the kitchen and bathroom to lesson muscle fatigue and joint pain while standing.

  • Install lever type handles on doors and closets to create easy access for everyone including those with limited mobility.

  • Prevent tripping hazards by eliminating floor transitions that are more than 1/4 inch deep.

  • Use door hardware for cabinetry that has a U-shape with space behind handle to allow fingers to slide in and open.

  • When remodeling a bathroom, specify "comfort height" for new water closet- this helps those with limited mobility or our older clients.

  • When choosing a new faucet, choose one with "fins" for handles so it is easier to use for everyone.

  • Remember that aging eyes need more task lighting, less glare, more contrast and less yellow.

  • Kitchens and bathrooms are all the rage with remodeling.  What can be done to prepare for the long term livability?  A number of things can be included like varying counter heights to assist with standing or sitting needs.
